What is a Mini Shaperz Longboard Kit?
Our Mini Shaperz complete 1/6th scale model kits are perfect gifts for surfers. When you want to know how to shape a surf board, our mini surf board kits can teach you! Each mini balsa longboard kit comes with:
- 1/6 scale balsa blank with pre-formed rocker
- 1/6 scale template
- 1/6 scale fin, pre-formed classic design
- Sanding block with rail shaping guides
- Sandpaper and foam for shaping and finishing
- Tung Oil for a traditional finish
- Dust mask
- Display stand to show off your creation!
The amazing kit includes all the components you will need to complete and display your own surfboard! Our Mini Shaperz blank is like a real balsa board, and comes pre-formed, including rocker. Each kit contains the necessary sanding block, sand paper and foam for creating the right shape and finish. The kit also includes a natural, dark Tung oil stain which gives a stunning color and is completely nontoxic. Once you have shaped and stained your own mini surfboard, use the included display stand to show it off. Our display stand is made with beautiful natural lines that are sure to accentuate your creation.
How Do I Build My Own Mini Surfboard?
Creating your own mini surfboard is a great way to pass the time while you are waiting for the tide to drop. This product is intended for ages 12 and up, so if a younger child wishes to create their only mini surfboard, adult supervision is needed.
To create your own mini surfboard:
- Begin by cutting out the pattern
- Apply the pattern to the wood blank and trace the outline
- Begin sanding in an upward sweeping motion until you have shaped the board into the desired pattern. We suggest using the included dust mask during this process
- Measure the front, middle and end to see if they are the correct width
- Stain the wood
- Stain and attach the fin with glue
- Assemble the stand to display the board
It only takes a few hours to sand down a beautiful little board. Please keep in mind that drying time is required between coats of Tung oil to give you that perfect, aged and classic look. In total, you can complete your work of art in just a few days, but you will appreciate it for years.
Is There Anything Not Included in the Kit That I Need?
Our Mini Shaperz surfboard kit includes almost everything you need to complete and display your mini surfboard. The only other items you will need are:
- An old cloth or t-shirt for applying the stain
- A felt tipped pen for tracing the pattern onto the blank
- Household glue for attaching the fin to the completed surfboard
To reduce sanding time, you can use a serrated knife. However, you must use a knife with caution to avoid splitting the blank or over-cutting the template line. The team at Mini Shaperz does not advise using a knife. We promise that if you just start sanding you will eventually get there! Once you have finished your mini surfboard, you will feel pride knowing you took the time to create it yourself.
